O&D maintains a policy of helping our customers keep their costs down. Part of that is saving cost in material, machining, and delivery lead time.
One recent example is a large aluminum bronze flanged bushing request we received from a new customer. We went straight to work designing a new mold and casting a part with as little excess material as possible. By building a special centrifugal casting mold just for this one part, we were able to keep the cast weight to 691 lbs. The final shipping weight was 388 lbs., resulting in only 300 lbs. of turnings. These were collected and will be used in future castings. These efforts result in very little wasted material and the customer receives a generous credit for those turnings.
The savings in weight and material result in a savings in machining. Machining is expensive in labor, equipment, and tooling. The less material that has to be machined away, the greater the savings to our customer.
To further save our customers expense and headache, we cast and machined an extra part and put it in stock. This customer only buys one at a time so one was sufficient. Had they had a problem during finish machining and needed a replacement part, or had they had an equipment malfunction and needed a part in a hurry, we have them covered with no delivery lead time, because the part is on our shelf ready to ship at the customer’s call. O&D assumes all the cost for preparing and stocking the extra part and for building the new mold.
These are just some of the things that set O&D apart. We take care of our customers. In this instance, it could be some time before we recover the cost of the mold we built, but we know that this level of customer care is what keeps good customers coming back to O&D Manufacturing, Inc. time and time again.
